today was bitterly cold. ive been depressed the past week or so. i hot-glued a bunch of shopkins real littles together; making towers of mini containers and the anthropomorphic food inside of them. i took my childhood blanket to the dry cleaners. i got it for my 5th birthday. it is light blue with fairy illustrations on it. both ends have ripped due to the fabric thinning over time. i have been putting off taking it to get mended because ive been embarrassed about how bad of a state it's in. the woman at the dry cleaners looked worried when she was inspecting it and i was afraid she was going to tell me its too damaged to repair, but she didnt.
walking around park slope listening to an indie rock band on my ex-neighbor's ipod, i saw a bench with a memorial of a baby on it. there was a plaque that said the name and length of the baby's life. below it, there was a laminated photo of the baby ziptied to the bench. then i walked down a street lined with brownstones. it was the day after new years and someone had left 6 pairs of "2022" glasses in a line on their stoop for people to take.
that night i went on the hunt for more mp3 players. i love listening to someone's elses ipod because i feel ike i am time traveling; hearing soundtracks to stranger's life from 10 or so years ago. i like to imagine who owned the ipod. how old were they when they got it? where did they live?
also the sound quality is way better than listening to music on a phone. i am using a pair of sony headphones right now, which sound ok, some parts of songs get blown out. do u guys have any over-ear headphones u like? looking to try out some new ones. lmk in the comments :D
ive been looking for something for a long time that can outlast a hard drive and make content viewable. the ipod is the perfect device for this. most of mine are almost 10 years old and work without any issues. i have 9 ipods at the moment, one is coming in the mail, so it will be 10 soon. if i sealed a 3rd generation ipod nano in a time capsule with a charger and power source, it could last 100 years or at least that's what i tell myself.
i have 12 hard drives that have all my data from the past 14 years on them. they aren’t labeled so when im looking for something i often go down a rabbit hole of memories, unearthing past photos and videos.
i was going through my hard drive from high school and i found my writing and photos from 2012 - 2014.
me in a video my friend made where i stood on top of a bench and spun around
for health class in 10th grade we had to keep a "mental health" journal where we would respond to a prompt each week. im not sure what the exact question was for journal #4, im guessing something to do with what influences young people to use drugs/alcohol. i wrote in response:
I think that the most powerful influences are the products themselves that are marketed with kids and teenagers in mind. Four Loko and certain brands of cigarettes seem as if they were made just for teenagers because they are toy-like, sweet and child like. Also pop culture plays a big role in teenagers’ decisions, like rappers. Wiz Khalifa and Lil Wayne make drugs seem like they have a lot of swag and are a good way to spend time.
here is something i wrote about going to art camp for a nonfiction writing class on april 11th, 2013:
Sirens cried to wind and the light, their shrill voices bleating between the whips of white. I kiss the bug netting of my window. My Polaroid reflected only the wooden posts. For the past weeks, my mind and hands have been at work, spending all of their time learning details, colors, and shapes. Hours are seconds and days are minutes inside the studio. Soon all my shirts feature designs by diet coke and ketchup. I am a salamander, slippery with sweat and out of reach. My meals come from a plastic wrapper. Dancing alone to Hawaiian love songs, I build a tent of dreams. The idea of standing inside of anything seems like a trap, so my body becomes a festival of smells and stains. I belong to the blood blue wool and melting copper alloys. The time runs with us through the Michigan woods. We are a herd of black sheep.
one of my barn friends tagged me in this on facebook in 2012
i once heard someone say that our time will be known by historians as a dark age because all the technology of today will be unusable hundreds of years from now. all the computers and phones will be dead and useless. i feel like we don't talk enough about the physical infrastructure of the internet. its dumb af that we call data stored on servers, the "cloud". in reality, data is not kept in the air but in hulking server ships in the ocean or in unmarked buildings in isolated areas.
one of google's server barges
facebook's server farm in sweden near the arctic circle
imagine what these buildings will look like in the future. probably at the bottom of the ocean covered in barnacles. some might be like dead malls.
when i go outside with just my ipod, i feel free, only tethered by the cord on my headphones.
lmk what ur thoughts on the physical infrastructure of the internet are. have u ever seen a server farm irl? i hope to visit one some day.
